Dear Rev. Powell,

I am writing to thank you for the article, “What Changed the Disciples?” that I read in the last issue of The News Observer, a newspaper for Dooly County.

Lately, I have come to think that we place too much emphasis on the cross and not enough on the Resurrection. Although you did not say it, the spirit of the article suggests that you might agree.

In my opinion, without the Resurrection our Lord might have been remembered as a good teacher and friend. Those terms, in themselves admirable, may have been then, as now, in short supply.

Nevertheless, as you said, it was the Resurrection that energized the disciples with the hope of a new understanding of everything – themselves and the world – the seen and the unseen.

Today, as the celebration of Easter diminishes, becoming more and more a matter of the bunny, the celebration of Halloween increases – and with no knowledge or connection with All Saints’ Day.

I grew up in Vienna some 70 or so years ago and now live in Charlotte, NC. I come to Vienna from time to time to visit the cemetery and to Fort Valley because of my love of camellias.

Thank you for the scholarship and witness to the faith of the Risen One.  (By the way, I think He is still ahead of us – pulling us ever closer to Himself – as a beautiful end and completion to everything.)

Best,

Bill
