Lee County gives Northside fifth loss in last six games
WARNER ROBINS, Ga. — The Northside Eagles football team (3-5, 1-2 Region 1-6A) took on the Lee County Trojans (7-1, 3-0 Region 1-6A) at McConnell-Talbert Stadium on Friday night and continued their skid.
After starting the season with two wins, the Eagles have lost five out of their last six games, including Friday night’s game against the Trojans, 56-7.
The Trojans didn’t wait long to start their beatdown of the Eagles, in fact, they didn’t even wait until the first play at scrimmage.
On the opening kickoff, the Trojans’ receiver caught the ball on the left sideline, reversed, turned upfield and ended the return in the end zone.
After forcing a three-and-out the Trojans returned the punt to the Eagles’ 32-yard line, and after converting a fourth-and-inches they took it 17 yards to make it a 14-0 score.
The Eagles’ defense looked like they had the Trojans where they wanted them on the next drive with a sack by Dorian Taylor and a false start forcing a third-and-21, but the Trojans picked up 21 yards and more on the next play with a 75-yard touchdown pass to make it 21-0.
Da’veon Latimore helped the Eagles move down the field with 15- and 40-yard runs to put them on the Trojans’ 12-yard line.
Unfortunately it was downhill from there.
The Eagles recovered their own fumble on the 19-yard line, and after two incomplete passes they attempted a field goal.
The Trojans were all over it, and they blocked the kick and returned it for their fourth touchdown of the evening.
A 45-yard run soon made it 34-0 Trojans, and the Eagles just couldn’t get any offense going.
They struggled to convert third downs, and their fourth downs were usually long.
The Trojans pushed the lead to 41-0 on an eight-yard naked bootleg around the left side, and with the struggling Eagles’ offense, that was the score at the half.
The Eagles came out of the locker room ready to put a dent in the Trojans’ lead, and marched their way from their own 25 to the Trojans’ 24-yard line to set up fourth-and-one.
The Trojans’ defense held, however, and the Eagles came up empty handed with a turnover on downs.
The Eagles did eventually score with help from a 53-yard run from Keron Milton, and Latimore punched it in to cut the lead to 49-7.
That was the first and last time the Eagles scored, and the Trojans made it a 56-7 game before the clock expired.
UP NEXT
The Eagles will look for redemption this week against Veterans (3-5, 0-3 Region 1-6A) who has been without starting quarterback Jake Maxwell and star receiver Preston Byrd.
