Lady Warhawks route Lady Bears at home

Getting your Trinity Audio player ready...

KATHLEEN, Ga. — The Lady Warhawks are having a great year. Coming into the game against Houston County they had only lost two games all season, and they lost those games by six points combined. They lost to Warner Robins in a thriller that went down to the wire, 66-64, and they will have a chance to even things up with Warner Robins next Saturday, Jan. 21.

It was all Veterans in the first half as they took a huge lead, 54-11. Veterans was spreading the ball around, and it seemed like they couldn’t be stopped early in the game. Gabby Minus was taking it the hoop at will, and she had nine points in the first quarter as Veterans dropped 25 points.

They turned up the heat in the second quarter as four different players — Kyra Allen, Des’teyn Seaton, Kaylie Bright and Leana Minus — all hit from behind the arc. They were lighting it up like a Christmas tree, and the Lady Warhawks’ prolific offense managed to score 30 points in the second quarter. Houston County struggled to find any type of rhythm as Veterans’ defense put the clamps down, frustrating the young team.

The Lady Bears woke up in the third quarter, but by that time Veterans had already pulled all of the starters. Alaina Coley led the team with seven points in the third quarter as the Lady Bears scored thirteen points, which is more than they scored in the first half. Yesaira Ortiz had five points off the bench for Veterans, and they finished off Houston County, 60-30, improving to 5-0 in region play.

Veterans will get a few days off, and then they will host Thomas County Central on Friday. Then, as I previously mentioned, they will have a showdown with Warner Robins Saturday.

With only five region games left, the Lady Warhawks are in great position, and they could very well go undefeated in region play. Houston County will look to regroup before they face Lee County Tuesday.

In another region matchup, they will face Northside Friday, and both of those games should be competitive. The Lady Warhawks just have too much firepower, but the Lady Bears have some bright young stars coming up in the program.
