Lady Warhawks blowout Coffee Trojans 7-0
WARNER ROBINS, Ga. — The Veterans Lady Warhawks (1-0-2) soccer team showed their strength against the Coffee Lady Trojans (0-3-1) on their home turf at Freedom Field on Friday’s 7-0 win.
At about the nine-minute mark, the Lady Trojans were awarded a throw-in on the Lady Warhawks defensive third, but was intercepted by senior Lily Maddox, who was able to get the ball to senior team captain Kamryn McCauley who missed the shot on Coffee’s net with 29 minutes left on the clock.
The action picked back up as freshman Marley Laguines drove the ball up field and passed it to senior Emily Smith who assisted the goal by Maddox with 27 minutes left in the first half.
The Lady Warhawks gained possession of the ball again after a kickoff by Coffee that led to a corner kick by sophomore Adelyn Condet and was controlled by Maddox, who attempted to score, but was just wide of the net.
The Lady Trojans were able to get the ball into Veterans territory, but the attempted shot was denied by junior Savannah Hall with 22 minutes remaining in the first half.
Three minutes later the Lady Warhawks threatened to extend their lead, but were quickly shut down.
Just 30 seconds later, Veterans successfully got the ball downfield to senior Anabel Corro to extend their lead to 2-0.
With 14:38 left in the first half Maddox was able to draw a foul inside the box to give the Lady Warhawks a chance to extend the lead. Veterans capitalized on their opportunity to secure a 3-0 lead.
The Lady Warhawks’ passing and footwork was put to the test as the Lady Trojans put pressure on Veterans’ defending third, but Laguines managed to clear the ball with 9:52 to play in the first half.
The Lady Warhawks scored another goal after driving up the side of the field and passing the ball around the box before increasing the score to 4-0.
13 minutes into the second half sophomore Sky Page and Maddox were able to work their way up the field, and Maddox crossed the ball into the box, but it was intercepted by Coffee.
It’s safe to say that the Lady Trojans didn’t go down without a fight, as they blocked shots by both Smith and McCauley that resulted in a Warhawk corner kick by Junior, Kylie D’Claro.
On the ensuing possession, McCauley utilized the chaos after the corner, and scored to increase the lead to six as the Veterans defensive line stood strong to hold Coffee at bay with no points on the board.
Just when everything seemed set and done, senior Zoriyah Menefee extended the lead to 7-0 with two minutes left on the clock.
When asked what her team did best head coach Christina Maloney stated, “The girls started connecting and working the ball through the middle of the field which ultimately led to the victory.”
“The upcoming season looks exciting, and we are hopeful to keep up the momentum and hopeful to win regions,” Maloney added.
