PERRY, Ga. — The Perry girls have not lost a region game in almost three seasons. Ever since Coach Nathan Dooley, also the Perry boys’ head coach, started pulling double duty, agreeing to fill the vacant position several years back, the Perry girls have dominated region play. And early this season, the girls beat both of the county’s top 6A teams, Houston County and Veterans, making a statement.
In addition to the tremendous amount of talent, the team has great chemistry, and they seem to be getting stronger as the season rolls along. They are primed for a deep playoff run, and this could be the year they reach the top of that mountain and bring home the state championship trophy.
From the start of the game, Perry was attacking nonstop, scoring seven goals in the first half, overwhelming Howard. Ariana Marfell had a hat trick on the evening, and Sadie Surber followed right behind with two goals. Fraser Knapek, Grace Surber, Neveah Fields and Julie Marfell all joined the party, each scoring a goal. It was that kind of night in the Panther Pit — total dominance in every aspect of the game.
“They did what we expected, to be honest,” said Coach Dooley, referring to the one-sided victory. “They’re hard working — they haven’t lost a region game now in three seasons. You know, it’s tough as it is trying to stay perfect, trying to stay humble, and know that we got to work every day we walk out here and come to practice and then execute, and that’s what they did tonight.”
Indeed, it is difficult to exist and remain in that rarified air, but somehow Perry has managed to stay at the top for some time. They are off for a week, and then they will take on Baldwin at home next Monday, Feb. 27.
