Lady Hornets tennis team takes state championship
Staff Reports
After taking first place in the GISA AAA girls doubles
tennis tournament in Macon, the team of Valerie McLure and Stephanie Campbell
split up as singles players when Westfield’s girls contended for the GISA team
title on Monday and Tuesday.
That moved paid off big as the Lady Hornets are the 2013
champions on the strength of singles victories by both Campbell and McLure.
The venue this time was the Newman Tennis Center in Augusta,
and the players had to deal with the threatening weather conditions earlier in
the week. Hence, not everything concluded on Monday as was scheduled.
The Lady Hornets, under coach Wendy Bryan, advanced through
the quarterfinals defeating Brookwood. They would then play the semifinals late
into Monday night to defeat a strong Augusta Prep team in a tiebreaker.
The finals were scheduled to be played Tuesday morning
against The Weber School, who defeated defending champion Deerfield-Windsor in
the other semifinal. It took a decisive victory by Campbell at No. 1 singles
(6-1, 6-2 over Lauren Rein, the Region 1-AAA champion), a hard-fought three-set
victory by McLure (4-6, 7-6, 10-8) and a three-setter by the doubles team of
Chelsea Williams and Jessica Southerland (6-4, 4-6, 11-9) to gain the three
needed wins.
“Each player contributed in a crucial victory at some point
during the regular season, region championships, and state tournament, to truly
make this a team title,” said Bryan.
McLure and Campbell were also named to
the All-State tennis team.
