Just One and That’s Enough
Going to the store just to pick up a few items can turn into a full-blown shopping excursion. Giving a ride to someone for a designated place can become the trip that never ends. I have even heard there is a bridge that leads to nowhere. Sometimes there can be a loose piece of string that can pull the whole outfit apart. There are things that start off in the simplest way that can end up in the most complicated way.
The Bill of Rights in the United States Constitution guarantees essential rights and liberties. It consists of the first ten amendments in this amazing document. There are a total of 27 such amendments in the Constitution, though there have been over 11,000 proposed. It reminds me of all the colors that are created from the base colors of red, yellow and blue. There is an innumerable number of changes we can create when given the chance.
In a similar fashion, the Bible teaches us that Moses returned from the mountain with 10 laws or commandments that we should use to control our behavior. That is when the race to perfect them came into play. The laws that started with 10, soon swelled to exceed 600 in number. The tendency to keep tweaking and adjusting something is sometimes too hard for us to manage.
It is no wonder that it was necessary to scrap the old system, the law, and replace it with a better one, Grace. There would be a tremendous price to pay for the institution of grace. The fault of the first system had to be worked out and everyone was not on board. Debates, arguments and catastrophic fights would be the result. People would be hurt, harassed and harmed in order to implement this New Testament. The price of change has always been strewn with bodies of real people so that we understand the value of human life and liberties.
The price for the change was paid for with a life. The changes we want to see involve our life. The difference that is made will impact the life of others. No wonder Jesus said that He would give us a new command, not commands. If we can get the one right then all of the other issues of life would be set in their proper place.
The one thing we should focus on affects politics, nations, communities and homes. The one thing provides relief for our worries, burdens, pressure and problems. The one thing helps make a difference that will improve every race, gender and person. The one thing that He said we should do is “Love One Another”.
Let that marinate in your heart, mind, soul, circumstance, situation, and relationships.
