Each year, the Perry Chamber of Commerce Governmental Affairs Committee hosts a reception ceremony to show their appreciation. This year marked the 20th year and the annual legislative appreciation took place last Thursday, August 26, at the Go Fish Aquarium on the Georgia National Fairgrounds. The event attracted well-known political and public figures from around the state of Georgia. The reception was held to thank elected officials of Houston County, Georgia.

Undervalued by many, this event gave Perry Chamber members the opportunity to show their support for their legislative delegation and to network with the others who work for their communities. Those who were given the floor briefly discussed the ongoing issues in Houston County as well as the steady improvements of its communities.

In attendance were Congressman Austin Scott (R) and Georgia Senator Reverend Raphael Warnock (D).

Also in attendance was Georgia Senator, Larry Walker (R), who stated, ” I have always and will forever love representing Perry and Houston County, Georgia.”

Scott Cox, the southwest area manager for Georgia Power, was the main speaker of the evening. Intriguing topics were mentioned during the reception, in which a few elected officials briefly discussed their points of view on the subjects at hand. Also serving as the Chairman of the Perry Chamber, Scott Cox explained how he feels, “Our delegation of legislators do a great job. They really help us in middle Georgia.”

Rezoning, redistricting and Houston County school’s third COVID year, were among the vocal topics of the event. Georgia House Representative Shaw Blackmon (R) explained how “The city, the school system & our federal partners are the best. The Perry chamber brings us all together. We are all genuine friends.” The Georgia representative was referring to the stereotype that politicians and community leaders do not get along well.

As a final message to those in attendance, Blackmon stated, “We want these cities and all of Houston County to continue thriving, but it starts with us. Legislature recently lowered taxes in Georgia, and I feel this is a great testament to how the Peach State is recovering.” He further stated, “We want our people to keep their own money. I’m grateful for our local elected officials that are continuing to work the frontlines during this difficult time. They are leading in everything that you can imagine. Most of all, a big thank you to our community. Nevertheless,” Blackmon added, “it’s a pretty day in Perry.”
