In the neutral zone – Personal accountability
That’s where I live, in the neutral zone, both physically and personally, but it’s hardly the way I live my life. Just ask Eddie Wiggins of Warner Robins. The first time I introduced myself to him, he said, “I know who you are, you are the ‘tell it like it is girl.’” Yep, that’s me. Don’t ask me unless you want to know my true opinion. I have two daughters who can attest to that, even my 5-year-old grandson has figured that out.
This week, like many others, has been absolutely amazing. I am truly passionate about my job as publisher of the Houston Home Journal. It has afforded me the opportunity to meet some truly remarkable people. I love getting to know people and hear their stories. Everyone has a story. It is amazing to me how much people can overcome adversity and follow their dreams and passions, creating businesses, services or just volunteering within their communities.
Hearing about someone who has pulled themselves up by the bootstraps and made a difference in this world. Personal accountability is what it’s all about. I am a member of the Perry Rotary Club because I believe in their motto, “Service before self.” There are a few organizations that I volunteer with that I am passionate about. I try very hard not to spread myself too thin, but I am one of those people that if I’m in, then I’m all in.
Something that totally leaves me in awe is people who have found that balance in their life. I strive for that balance every day. Giving back is what it is truly all about.
I met Shelia Kemp, the owner of Endless Love Pet Palace, in Perry early this week. She has created a thriving business because of her childhood. Shelia is so passionate about the babies, her pets, she takes care of and it is obvious from the moment you walk in the front door. If you find some time, drop by and say hello.
Another woman I met a few weeks ago is Jodi Daley, the actual inspiration for this column. I have been talking with Jodi over the last few weeks about an upcoming article for the paper. During this time, she has talked to me about her passion and her vision for the future. She and her partner, Lori Freeman, will open a business that I believe the people of Perry are going to be thrilled to have. They are really paying attention to detail. It’s not just about the business, it’s more personal than that. It’s about what the community wants and needs.
I look forward to meeting many more people in Houston County. If you have something on your mind and would like to discuss a subject, feel free to email me at cadams@hhjnews.com. If you want to stop by the newspaper, we’re at 1210 Washington St., across from Perry City Hall.
As a good friend of mine, Jan Taylor, would say, “Have some fun today!”
