I Get Around©

Getting your Trinity Audio player ready...

That subject (I Get Around) came up last week as we were having dinner with my son, David, and his family around a “new” dining room set we were trying out. Let me explain.

But first, if you’re a senior from the 60’s, I’m sure you can’t think about those days and not remember The Beach Boys who made the song, “I Get Around,” a chart topper. With that in mind I went “Surfin'” on the internet (Sorry, I just couldn’t resist that one) and here’s what I found.

The Beach Boys were formed in Hawthorne, California, in 1961 (the year I graduated from high school; no wonder they’re front and center of my teen memories!) The group’s original lineup consisted of brothers Brian, Dennis, and Carl Wilson, their cousin Mike Love, and friend Al Jardine. Distinguished by their vocal harmonies and musical ingenuity, they are one of the most influential acts of that era.

The Beach Boys formed as a garage band centered on Brian’s songwriting and managed by the Wilsons’ father, Murry. In 1963, the band enjoyed their first national hit with “Surfin’ U.S.A.”, beginning a string of top-ten singles .

The Beach Boys are one of the most commercially successful bands of all time, selling over 100 million records worldwide. “I Get Around” is the opening track from their 1964 album All Summer Long. Written by Brian Wilson and Mike Love.

And they’re still going strong today with concerts this week in Memphis, Huntsville, Birmingham and Biloxi! Anyone want to go? How’s that for a group that started when we were teens?!

Enough of The Beach Boys. How did that subject come up anyway?

As I said, we were sitting around the dinner table in reflecting conversation and I asked David how many homes he thought he had visited since we started Visiting Angels® 15 years ago. We did some quick calculations of 1.5 per day x 5 day per week x 50 weeks per year x 15 years and came up with 5625 homes in the middle Georgia area!

But those are just numbers. The real story is told in the hearts and lives of the seniors David and the whole Visiting Angels team have been able to care for over those years. And not just the seniors, but the peace of mind they’ve brought to their families as well.

Obviously there is a place for nursing homes and assisted living facilities in the mix of senior care. But for many, many seniors “There’s No place like home” to receive comforting care when it’s needed.

And right from the beginning that care has been built on the firm, loving foundation of “The Golden Rule,” of treating others the way we’d like to be treated ourselves.

If you have any senior related issues that need help in your circle of life, David would be a good one to call. I’d say He Gets Around, wouldn’t you?

Bill Milby is a graduate Automotive Engineer from LeTourneau University and The Chrysler Institute and a certified Bulldog with an MBA from UGA. After 34 years in the automotive, RV and bus industries, Bill, together with his two sons, started Visiting Angels of Middle Georgia in 2008. His sons and their wives run the business of caring for Middle Georgia Seniors in their own homes on a day-to-day basis. They are a very active and supporting family of Middle Georgia.

Shortly after starting that business, Bill approached the Editor of The Houston Home Journal with the idea of a regular column called All About Seniors to highlight issues that would be educational, entertaining and helpful to seniors in the particular life issues that affect them as a cohort in our community. The editor, who was at the time caring for a senior relative himself, immediately recognized the value of such a column and Bill has been a weekly contributor ever since.

Bill is married to the bride of his youth, Mary Beth Milby, and they recently celebrated their 55th wedding anniversary. Together they have five children and nine grandchildren.

Bill says he really appreciates his loyal AAS readers, especially when they send him feedback or ask questions about his columns. Thanks for reading All About Seniors!
