Hurricane Idalia’s possible impact on middle Georgia

HOUSTON COUNTY, Ga. – Hurricane Idalia will make landfall on the Florida coast, but thankfully is expected to have a minimal impact in central Georgia.

According to meteorologist Nichole Listemaa, the storm is expected to hit Houston County on Wednesday, Aug. 30. Listemaa said the primary hazard for the area will be heavy rainfall with 15 to 20 mph winds. She added that currently it’s predicted there will be up to one to two inches of rain.

However, she added that there could be potential banding which could lead to three to five inches of rain and wind gusts up to 35 mph. She said winds could be breezy but since the center of the storm is towards the East, it will most likely hit the Southeast portion of the state.

Wednesday is the day with the most impact, but storms were predicted for Tuesday as well.

“We’re gonna have some showers and thunderstorms so any storm between now and Wednesday could drop some locally heavy rainfall and some localized flooding is possible,” said Listemaa.
