Houston Healthcare is set to host their spring nursing recruitment fair and open house on March 24. Chief Nursing Officer Melinda Hartley said it will be held at the Cary Martin Conference Center located inside the Houston Healthcare Pavilion from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.

“We are excited to once again host this open house,” said Hartley. “Our hope is always to attract experienced nurses and grad nursing students.”

Director of Nursing Shellisa Houston Martin said representatives of different departments of Houston Healthcare, such as the intensive care unit, emergency room, etc., will be on hand to speak with, and there will also be on-site interviews for grad nurses and registered nurses. If a candidate has all of the necessary qualifications, offers will be made that same day.

“I love Houston Healthcare; we are like a big family here,” said Martin. “It’s a very happy place to work with many opportunities for advancement. You can go from a new grad to assistant nurse manager, manager to director. We have a learn, grow, advance program here and we want to grow our nurses to start here and stay here.”

Acute Medical Manager Anthony Cooks said he could testify about the great opportunities in growing through Houston Healthcare.

“I graduated from what was known then as Macon State College in 2009 as a staff nurse,” said Cooks. “I then came to assistant manager to now manager. The reason I’ve stayed here for so long is mainly because of the culture. As a staff nurse, you could see the executive team in the lunchroom with you and you can talk to them, get to know them. People speak to each other in the hallways and it is simple things like that that create a positive environment. We are a family here and that makes for a better environment for our patients.”

The fair and open house was first started in 2014. Hartley said the largest turnout they had was 65 and they were able to hire 12 percent out of those candidates.

“It’s that culture that we have that is so embracing of individuals,” said Hartley. “At the same time, we have the latest and greatest technology. We have the latest MRI machine, CT scan machines and we also have the ultra violet robots that we use in the rooms to make sure we get rid of clostridium difficile. We embrace our employees to help find solutions to problems and we are a ever-changing culture.”

Houston Healthcare also provides a nurse extern, residency and fellowship programs. Hartley said those programs pair new nurses fresh out of school with a preceptor who helps guide them for 12 to 16 weeks before they work on their own. Cooks attested that it provides a smooth and good transition out of school and helps one grow.

The address to the fair and open house is 233 N. Houston Road, Warner Robins, GA 31093. For more information, email recruiter@hhc.org.
