Houston County wins first of the year, 21-13, over Central

The Houston County High School Bears won their first game of

the season on Thursday night, defeating visiting Central High School 21-13.

The play of the game could easily be awarded to a number of Bears

players -junior running back/linebacker Wesley Steiner scored two rushing

touchdowns during the first half and junior receiver Isaia Harris caught five

passes during the game that regularly got his team within scoring distance- but

it should belong to junior back Jaylen Mills who along with carrying the ball,

returned punts, and caught was the nail-in-the-coffin touchdown from junior

quarterback Max Rigby with 7:23 remaining in the game to put the home team

ahead by eight points.

Starting the fourth quarter with a one-point lead, 14-13,

Houston County head coach Ryan Crawford and his staff refused to take their

foot off of the offensive gas peddle resulting in the drive that led to that

final score. Rigby found Harris for a first down to the Chargers 45 yard line.

Junior running back Eric Williams, yet another strong ball carrier for the

Bears offense, had a pair of strong runs that put his team on the 11-yard line

before Rigby connected with Mills for his first touchdown pass of the game.

Central Macon lost 37-0 in this building just two weeks ago

to the Veterans Warhawks in a preseason game but this Chargers team, in

particular its defensive unit, was much more prepared for what they were going

top face at Freedom Field. Central sophomore free safety Jalik Thomas had a

number of big plays including an interception of a Rigby pass to end the second

quarter. Chargers senior quarterback Donald Lamb helped keep his team close on

the offensive end, scoring on a 17-yard scramble to put Central on the board for

the first time at the end of the first quarter. His 20-yard pass to senior

receiver Aubrey Evans set up the scoring play.

A third quarter fourth and one stop by the Houston County

defensive line seemed to change the momentum of the game.

Houston County will next host a consecutive Macon school in

the Rutland High School Hurricanes (0-1) on Friday, Aug. 31.
