Houston County schools anticipate football Friday nights

Getting your Trinity Audio player ready...

HOUSTON COUNTY, Ga. — There is silence at Warner Robins High. There is silence at Northside, Perry, Veterans and HOCO as well. Nobody is practicing their back pedals on the football field. There is no one running suicides in the gyms and no one hitting baseballs or softballs in the batting cages.

Every year, the Georgia High School Association mandates its “Dead Weeks” for the scholastic year. The calendar of events for the 2022-2023 school year was revised at the end of June. The Dead Weeks for the 2022-2023 scholastic year are ongoing.

According to the GHSA calendar, “Dead Weeks” are Monday, May 30, through Sunday, June 5, and Monday, July 4, through Sunday, July 10. After completing acclimation periods and 7-on-7 camps, teams are allowed to conduct full-padded practices, beginning on August 1. During these “Dead Weeks,” all GHSA offices will be closed.

Coaches and athletic directors cannot schedule any fully padded practices before August 2nd and five days of conditioning known as the GHSA acclimation period. All players must take part in five consecutive days of conditioning before suiting up in helmets, under garments and shoulder pads. No school may travel or host contests and exhibitions prior to August 19.

Also in 2022, the maximum amount of games will remain the same. Varsity teams will have 10 scheduled games and all junior varsity teams will play in seven scheduled games. The last date that a GHSA regular season game can be conducted is November 5.

The first round of the GHSA playoffs will start and finish on the second weekend of November. All state quarterfinal matchups will take place on November 25. GHSA football semifinals and finals fours will be on December 2, and the state championship games will be played on the following weekend of December 8-10.
