Houston County Lady Bears to host Heritage-Conyers in first round of AAAAAA state playoffs
The series came down to a third and final game
because of two reasons: these are the two best teams in arguably the best
softball region in the state and because it had to, it was only right.
The Houston County Lady Bears and the Lee County
Lady Trojans were the class of Region 1-6A all season and now after having
played to a draw on Tuesday night in Douglas the region title would come down
to one last game.
On Wednesday night that team was the Lady Trojans,
who won 7-6 and now will go into the state playoffs as a number one seed and
thus will have home field advantage throughout. Houston County will also begin
the state playoffs at home against Heritage-Conyers on Tuesday night with a
game three on Wednesday if necessary.
Tied at two runs each after the first inning, the
Lady Bears went ahead 4-3 during the third inning. This series has been up and
down, and this series-clinching contest was no different as the Lady Trojans
scored four runs in the fourth to go ahead for good.
I thought we competed well at the top of the lineup
but we have to get better at the bottom,” said Lady Bears head coach Scott Lamb
via text hours after the game. “I’ll say [this series] lived up to its billing,
one versus two, and gave the fans all they wanted to see.”
Lady Bears senior Rylee Lamb pitched her second
game of the series. “The pitching performances from both teams were gutty
considering the heat and number of pitches both threw.”
The games on Tuesday were a microcosm of how the
teams played through the regular season. The Lady Bears won game one 4-3 behind
a complete game performance by Lamb who also struck out
six Lady Trojans in the process. Houston Home Journal 2019 player of the year
Makayla Krepps went 2-3 with two RBI. Junior second baseman Kendall Huelsman
also had two hits and drove in a run as well.
Lee County won the second game 14-4 to push the series to a third game.
The Lady Trojans went ahead 4-3 in the second inning, and scored five
unanswered runs during the third and fourth innings to stay ahead for good.
Houston County junior pitcher Olivia Brown, an all-county selection along with
Huelsman, Krepps and Lamb, started the game and gave up a season-high 10 earned
runs and 12 hits.
