Houston County High opens new competition gym facility
WARNER ROBINS, Ga. — The ribbon was cut on a new competition gym facility at Houston County High School Monday.
Dr. Mark Scott, Houston County superintendent of schools, said that while there had been some materials shortage setbacks in procuring some required materials to make the construction happen, the facility was completed within a 14-month timeframe.
“Construction has been challenging over the last couple of years, but thankfully we’re here today and students are able to use the facility,” Scott said.
With so many extracurricular activities available to county students these days, Scott said that sometimes the groups are competing for space to practice their respective pastimes.
“This is an additional space that will allow them to all have a place to practice and all have a place to compete,” Scott said. “We’re also proud to be able to host state playoff events and to have the adequate seating to be able to do that.”
This milestone is taking place in the months following the groundbreaking of the Tommy Stalnaker Aquatic Center located nearby on Cohen Walker Drive.
“I feel like students are more successful if they’re engaged or involved in something in school, and this just provides great facilities for those students to be engaged,” Scott added. “Our swim facility will allow our swim team to have, for the first time, a place to call home here in Houston County. We’re excited about that opportunity, and we’re going to continue to work to make sure our students have the very best.”
