PERRY —  With Veterans Day a district holiday, the Houston County Board of Education met on Monday, Nov. 10, instead.

Superintendent of Schools Dr. Richard Rogers expressed appreciation for the renewal of the Education Special Local Option Sales Tax (E-SPLOST).

“This vote ensures that our district can continue to update facilities, increase security and give our students and staff the resources they need without the entire tax burden going solely to our property owners,” Rodgers said. “It is truly an honor to serve this community that values education and believes in supporting its schools. We remain committed to being good stewards of every dollar and every opportunity entrusted to us as we provide the best education for the students of Houston County.”

In his Superintendent’s Report, he celebrated the board’s recognition as an Exemplary Board by the Georgia School Board Association.

“Our board models what it means to lead together,” he said. “Your commitment to collaboration, transparency and continuous improvement helps make Houston County one of the best School Districts in Georgia. This recognition is a well-deserved reflection of your dedication to students, staff and our community.”

Rodgers also recognized the REACH scholarship. He said six eighth graders across the district were named REACH scholars and were awarded $10,000 towards their college education.

“The REACH Georgia program provides support for students to help them successfully progress from middle school through college,” he said. “These students will work with an academic coach and mentor throughout high school and will receive the scholarship funds upon high school graduation.”

The board had an item of old business that involved a rezoning proposal for Parkwood Elementary and Westside Elementary beginning in the 2026-2027 school year. They approved the proposal to create one attendance zone for Parkwood Primary and Westside Elementary.

“I think it is going to be a great advantage for both of those schools and that community to have those schools re-zoned in that manner,” Board Chair Helen Hughes said.

The next Houston County Board of Education meeting will be held on Tuesday, Dec. 9, at 1 p.m. The full agenda of this meeting can be found at simbli.eboardsolutions.com/SB_Meetings/ViewMeeting.aspx?S=4089&MID=129560.
