Houston County Bears enter season as No. 23 in nation

2020 record: 6-6

The Bears had the luxury of only having four seniors on their roster last season. Though lefty pitcher Jaden Woods, who’s now playing for University of Georgia, was one of the few seniors that graduated, this season is still a highly anticipated one for the Bears.

Houston Co. comes into the 2021 season as the No. 23 ranked team in the nation by Perfect Game with one of the best pitching staffs in the state.

Pitchers Coleman Willis and Brodie Chestnutt are both seniors this season who already signed to play for Power Five colleges. Chestnutt was the No.5 best right-handed pitcher in Georgia and Willis was the No.6 ranked right-handed pitcher when they signed their nation letters of intent back in November.

Outfielder Treyson Hughes, who was raked the sixth best outfielder in the state when he signed in November, is another senior that’ll help lead the Bears this season.

Rather than having just a handful of seniors like last season, the Bears are loaded with 11 seniors and 17 upperclassmen in total out of the 22-man roster. It’s apparent that experience and senior leadership will be driving factors for Houston County as head coach Matt Hopkins enters his third season as the Bears head coach.

Hopkins took the Bears to the Elite Eight in his first season and was robbed from a season last year. So it’ll be interesting to see how much the Bears can achieve this year with a veteran squad.
