Houston County Basketball Wrap-up: Perry High, Houston County High, Westfield
Perry High

Starting region competition against West Laurens is nothing
new for Perry High boys basketball. Starting things with a nail-biting finish
with the Raiders is also nothing new.
On Tuesday in the campus gym in Dexter, Perry’s Panthers
defeated West Laurens in the first Region 2-AAAA contest for both clubs 56-55.
Brett Hardy’s club established a cushion of eight points over the second and
third periods, which was quite important as the home Raiders exploded with 25
fourth-quarter points.
It was 16-14 in West Laurens’ favor, but Perry held the
Raiders to 14 over a 16-minute span. At the half the Panthers were ahead 24-21,
and it was a 38-30 game with one more period to play.
K.J. Smith was 4-for-6 from outside the 3-point arc and was
overall 65 percent from the floor in scoring 28 points. He led Perry with five
steals as well. Nobody else reached double figures on offense, Marquez Thomas
adding eight points and a Panther-best six rebounds.
Kevin Ford scored five points and made five assists.
Houston
County High
Houston
County High’s boys won a non-region road game Tuesday 77-63 at Twiggs County.
“We played
poorly in the third quarter, said head coach Stephen Walls. “We were up 19 in
the second and third and let the lead slip due to a poor defensive effort. We
had a lot of guys in foul trouble. Several guys had three fouls in the third.”
Davon
Akins, after canning 38 points on Veterans, scored 17 of his 19 points in the
first half to pace the Bears. Andrew Graham had 20 points and five assists, and
Jamarkus Williams had 15 points.
“It was a
very good offensive effort, but we have a lot to work on before we play Dublin
(Friday) and Lowndes (today),” said Walls. “We are 4-2 on the year and I am
pleased with that, but we are nowhere near our potential yet. I cannot wait to
see that happen.”
Westfield Academy
Westfield’s
boys basketball team took on the 2012 GISA AAA runner-up, Griffin Christian,
Tuesday at home and fell 62-49.
“Griffin
has a good team returning from last year’s state runner-up team,” said head
coach Jake Walls. “Their guards are outstanding … all scored in double
figures.”
The Hornets
were ahead after one quarter, 11-9, but the visitors took over with a 20-point
second period. Westfield had 25 in the second half to 34 for Griffin Christian.
Barrertt
Stanley led all scorers with 19 points.
In the
girls game, the Westfield Lady
Hornets cruised to victory 81-21. Ten of Cass Cassell’s players scored with
Katlyn Moseley leading the way with 16 points. Callie Hammerle had 15 points,
valerie mclure had 13 points and McKinley Walton had 10 points and 10 rebounds
for her first double-double of the season. Sydney Ledford had 13 rebounds.
