Houston County athletes participate in signing day
Houston County High School has become a local premier athletic powerhouse. Houston County’s culture for preparing athletes for the collegiate level has grown in years past. We all know the story of how National Signing Day began. The world has changed since the early eighties, and so has the way high school athletes sign their national letters of intent. Throughout the day on Tuesday, Houston County athletes sat surrounded by family, friends, coaches and teammates, donning caps and T-shirts representing their chosen institutions of higher learning.
On yesterday, I conducted a real-time story of the HOCO athletes that participated in the Latest Signing Day. Some Houston County athletes are headed to the most sought of athletic programs in the country. This is the second signing day of Spring 2022, for Houston County athletes.
Every year, signing day represents the annual celebration of young men and women signing a commitment to perform at the highest of levels. How big of a deal are these commitments? Major television networks like ESPN, ESPNU, HBCU Game-Day and others dedicate hours of coverage to teenagers signing their letters of intent. Houston County had four athletes who participated in the Latest signing day. This signing day featured: Jordyn Johnson, Ronnie Thomas, Bryce Davis and Daveigh Milton.
Local Hoop star, Jordyn Johnson is staying in the “478”. Johnson will play at a local historically black college & university. Jordyn Johnson will play under coach Andrea Williams and the Lady Wildcats of the Fort Valley State University. Fort Valley State University competes in the Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SIAC) of the NCAA Division-II. Coach Daniell Johnson led the Houston County Lady bears basketball team to a 21-5 record in their 2021-2022 season. Along with a region title, this senior class led the rebirth of Houston women’s basketball.
Earlier this spring, McKenzie Arline, Marquia White and Alexis Williams signed their national letters of intent to remain teammates at the collegiate level, at Brescia University. Jordyn Johnson is the latest Lady Bear to sign a letter of intent to play collegiate basketball, under coach Johnson. Jordyn Johnson was named to the region 1-6A All-Region first team. Johnson was also named region 1-6A women’s co-player of the year.
Ronnie Thomas III signed his national letter of intent to become a member of the Kennesaw State Football team. Thomas was a long snapper for the Houston County Bears, under Coach Ryan “Big Call” Crawford.
For the other signings, Bryce Davis and Daveigh Milton will head to Greenwood, South Carolina, as these two athletes have become members of the Lander University Track and Field team. Lander competes in the Peach Belt conference of the NCAA Division-II.
