Houston Bears look great after Perfect Game showdown

After competing in the inaugural Perfect Game Gulf Coast High School Showdown, Houston Bears Coach Matt Hopkins believes it is time to rest and recover with region play beginning this week. Hopkins released the following statement: “Lost 6-5 on walk off single to Doral Academy in the championship. We went 2-2 on the weekend with an extra inning loss last night, as well. Congrats to Drew Burress on earning tournament MVP. I am proud of all of our boys.”

The Houston County Bears have won thirteen games, thus far. Scoring 145 runs and allowing fewer than 65, the Houston County Bears are looking very fierce as they anticipate their region 1-6A stretch of games. Perfect Game Scouting Coordinator Tyler Russo had the following to say about Houston’s Ryker Chavis: “Over the weekend, Chavis struck out 10 batters in 5 innings played. Chavis’ velocity is ticking up a bit, into the mid-80s. Ryker Chavis’ change up and curve ball continue to be big pitches from him.”

The Houston Bears defeated Mosley for their first game of the tournament. Afterwards, Coach Hopkins mentioned: “What a game. After 13 innings the Bears won 3-2 on a two out, walk-off over the defending 5A Florida State champions, Mosley.” In game two, the Bears defeated Mater Lakes Academy (Miami, Florida) 14-0, in five innings. For game three, the Bears faced Har-Ber (Arkansas). The Houston Bears finished 1-1 on Friday, after loosing to Har-Ber (Arkansas) 2-1, in 8 innings. After advancing to the tournament championship, the Houston County Bears were defeated by Doral Academy, 6-5 after a walk off single. After competing in the showcase, the HoCo Bears released the following statement, via social media: “Congrats to Drew Burress and Brook Willis on being top performers at last weekend’s tournament. Congrats also to Andrew Dunford, Ryker Chavis, Carson Small and Gage Harrelson for being listed as top performers, as well.”

Texas Tech signee, Gage Harrleson also reached another milestone over the weekend. Harrleson recorded his 100th and 101st hit as a Houston Bear. The Houston Bears being a nationally ranked team comes with its expectations, but the Bears already have the bar set high. The Bears traveled to Valdosta on Tuesday and faced the 13-3 Wildcats for the first of three consecutive games against Valdosta. The Bears will play a home double-header on Friday. Game one will begin at 4:30 p.m. and game two of the double-header will start at 7 p.m. in “War-Town.”

Over the weekend, the Houston County Bears became a better team. Showcasing their talents in Florida, “War-Town’s” team got a little closer. While in PCB, the Bears from Houston used several pitchers: Andrew Dunford, Ryker Chavis, Carson Small and Landon Tankersley saw time on the mound. The Bears are now 13-4 in 2022 and have four non-region contest remaining. Houston County’s regular season will continue through April 22. You can be assured the Houston Bears will see the GHSA state tournament in 2022.
