Houston Bear athletics named all-sports champs
It takes time and effort to win a GHSA region title. There are eight regions in each of the seven Georgia classifications. Houston County High School is a member of Georgia High School Association’s region 1 of class 6A (1-AAAAAA). The Bears were named the GHSA region 1-AAAAAA All Sports Champion for the 2021-2022 school year. This is the first time in Houston County’s school history, that Bear athletics has received this accolade. The Houston County Bears won ten region championships during their scholastic year. The Houston County Bear athletic teams that claimed region 1-AAAAAA titles this scholastic year were: Men’s and women’s track and field, women’s soccer, baseball, women’s basketball, golf, softball, wrestling, fine arts and volleyball.
In early May, the following statement was released: “We are excited to announce that Houston County won the All-sports trophy, this year. It was a super close race. Very proud of our coaches and athletes,” said a representative from the Houston County athletic department. Women’s soccer coach, Moe Mahohmed was awarded region 1-6A coach of the year. Athlete, Emily Grady was awarded region 1-6A player of the year.
According to coaches from HOCO, Houston County has coaches who love their respected sport. It took several years for Houston County High School to win the all-sports accolade. Likewise, the Perry Panthers had a chance to bring home more hardware in 2022, as well. Earlier this spring, the Perry Panthers athletic department was awarded the region 4-4A All-sports trophy and accolade. Both Houston County and the Perry Panthers have the full support of the Houston County community.
