Hornets, Warhawks claim region championships
Through the week the Veterans Lady Warhawks and Westfield Lady Hornets each won their respective region championships.
The Warhawks clinched the Region 1-5A title with a win over Coffee on Monday. The Warhawks won 3-1 and Coffee didn’t earn a run until the seventh inning.
Veterans will be a No. 1 seed in the 5A state playoffs with home field advantage. They’ll either face Creekside (7-10) or Banneker (7-7) in the first round.Creekside and Banneker both have a 7-7 region record, typically overall records break the tie but given that Creekside has played three more games and lost all three, the Journal can’t determine who’ll be the No. 4 seed at this time. The Warhawks will face whoever is the No.4 seed in Region 3-5A.
Veterans also finished the season 15-5 overall, the best record the Warhawks have finished the regular season with in the past six years.
The first round of the GHSA 5A State Softball Playoffs will be played from October 12 through October 14.
As for the Hornets, they’re once again GISA Region 4-AAA champs, a title they’ve held for years. With the postseason up next the Hornets are edging closer to its fifth state championship in a row.
Through the regular season, the Hornets finished 19-1 and lost to Briarwood Academy, a team they could possibly play in the state championship game if Briarwood was to remain the No.3 seed in GISA AAA and both were to advance to the big dance.
Through the season, junior pitcher Sydney Langdon has been nothing short of special. Langdon has a .52 ERA through the 67 innings she’s pitched and amassed 129 strikeouts. She almost has more home runs (3) than the earned runs (5) she’s given up all season.
Even after losing a big class of seniors last season and becoming acquainted with a new head coach this year, the Hornets’ standard is still the same— and that’s being the best.
The GISA AAA State Softball Playoffs begin on October 9 and each series will be best two-out-of-three.
Once again, the Hornets will have a target on their back as they look to achieve an unprecedented five-peat.
