Hornets face Brentwood in region showdown
The Westfield Lady Hornets can almost smell a fifth-straight state title as they edge closer and closer to the GISA AAA state playoffs.
Westfield is 16-1 overall this season with wins over John Milledge Academy (the team Westfield beat in the state championship last year), East Coweta (a 7A public school and nationally recognized powerhouse that’s lost just one game this season) and North Paulding (a 7A public school).
The Hornets’ sister duo of Careligh and Marena Knowles have been on fire as two of the team’s top hitters this season. Carleigh, a sophomore, has a .486 batting average, 19 RBIs and three home runs. Marena, a senior, is batting a .469 average with 10 RBIs and three home runs.
Slugging sophomore Emmy Dehem has a team high of five home runs with a .375 batting average and 15 RBIs, and freshman Kendall Fowler holds a .323 batting average with 12 RBIs and two home runs.
Junior pitcher Sydney Langdon has totaled 112 strikeouts this season and holds a .47 ERA from the circle. At bat, Langdon is still lethal with a .354 batting average, 10 RBIs and two homers.
Though the Hornets are dominant, they’re still second in the region behind Brentwood, who they face this weekend.
Brentwood is 5-0 within GISA AAA Region 4 and 6-3 overall on the season. Westfield will host Brentwood on Saturday, Sept. 25 at 12:00 p.m.
