Home struck by unidentified motorist over weekend
While David Moore considers himself lucky to have not been home at the time of the unpleasant incident, he wants to find the person who is responsible for demolishing the garage of his Bonaire residence, Saturday. “A lot of work and a lot of memories are gone,” he stated. Moore had converted the area into a fully equipped gym where several people came to workout on a regular basis.
“They had to either be sleep or under the influence,” Moore said, referring to the still unidentified driver of the vehicle. He pointed toward the tire tracks that mark the place where the vehicle left the road, crossed a ditch, and traveled several feet before plowing through the wall of his home gym. A second set of prints show evidence of where the vehicle left the scene. “It must’ve been some kind of truck is all I can I can think,” he said. “It had to suffer a lot of body damage, and for whatever they were driving to hit all this heavy equipment and still be functional enough to back out of here and drive away; it couldn’t have been a small car.”
The grounds were still drenched from recent rainfall at the time of the incident, and Moore said that he believes it took some time for the driver to make his/her getaway. Deep tracks were still on the ground and heavy mud splatter was plastered on several areas of the home’s exterior framework. Moore believes it’s all an indication that the vehicle’s tires were spinning through the mud for a while before the vehicle was able to totally free itself from the saturated turf. According to Moore, nearby neighbors heard the ruckus from the incident, which was reported to have occurred around 2 a.m., but they were hesitant to come out of their house at that hour to see what was causing it.
“I’m former military,” Moore said. “When I hear trouble, I’m the type of person who comes out to see what it is and what I can do to protect those around me. But everybody’s not like that.” Moore learned about what had happened to his home through a call from authorities. He was in Savannah at the time and dropped everything to rush home. When he arrived, he saw the mess and it made him angry that someone would cause that kind of destruction to another person’s property, and then just leave. “It was a mess out here,” he said. Moore spent the better part of Saturday morning loading and hauling away much of the debris, but he took pictures of it all with his cell phone to show authorities.
If it hadn’t been for some heavy workout equipment that was right at the wall that divided his gym from the main part of his house, Moore says the vehicle would likely have driven right through his bedroom. He pointed out a place where a weight that had apparently been struck by the truck, had flown through the air and hit the dividing wall with such force that it put a hole in it.
Not only was most of his workout apparatuses destroyed, but also several weightlifting championship trophies that were stored on the shelving of the garage walls. “I can’t get that stuff back,” Moore said. “I can’t replace those.”
According to an online post by Moore’s son, Austin, the vehicle in question is suspected to be a white pickup truck (possibly a Chevy). If anyone has any information that could lead to the identity of the driver or if anyone sees a vehicle with damage that matches this incident, they are asked to call the Houston County Sheriff’s Office.
