HoCo opens season on big stage at Corky Kell Classic
Tomorrow night the Houston County High School Bears football program, already big time in it’s own right, will take a step in the direction of statewide recognition. The Bears are playing the Mary Persons High School Bulldogs, a 4-A program out of nearby Forsyth, in one of two games that night. An 8:45 p.m. game between Lee County High School and Jones County High School will be the night cap. This will be HoCo’s season opener following a 55-0 scrimmage win at Perry High School on Fri., Aug. 5. The Bulldogs will stay on the road following their game against the Bears and travel to Jackson, Ga. to face the Red Devils on Fri., Aug. 26. Putting all of the schedules and records aside, this game will be the first true test of the season for Houston County.
“I think Houston Couny is a really good football team and Vonn [Lassiter] and his coaching staff have done a great job down there,” says Mary Persons High School head fooball coach Brian Nelson. “With all due respect to all of the other teams on our schedule, this is going to be one of the biggest games we’ll play this season.”
Many questions about how potent the Bears offense, led by University of Georgia signee and senior quarterback Jake Fromm, senior receivers Amari Colbert, Kimar Robinson and Eli Watson and the running back duo of senior Shelton Horton and Jaeven West, were answered last week against the Panthers but the Bulldogs’ defense is on an entirely level. “With Jake Fromm, one of the best quarterbacks we’ll play against this season and in the state of Georgia to go along with Watson and Colbert and that big offensive line, it should be quite the test for our guys,” says Nelson.
For those without tickets or time to attend, Fox Sports Southeast will be broadcasting the game and Fox Sports Go will be simultaneously streaming the game online. Local radio in Macon will also be broadcasting the games.
