HoCo Lady Bears softball 3-0
There isn’t a sign that reads ‘Please do not feed the Lady Bears’ anywhere on the Houston County High School campus but maybe there should be. Following a loss to Perry in a scrimmage on Thursday, Aug. 4, the Lady Bears softball team has outscored their opponents 28-9 during their first three regular season games of the 2016 season. The Lady Bears offense is most definitely eating at this early point of the season. Victories over Warner Robins High School (8-3) and Monticello High School (10-0) and most recently over the Jones County Lady Greyhounds (Gray, Ga.) on the road Wednesday have the Lady Bears undefeated and looking for more. “The good news with our start is that we have a lot things to still work on,” says coach Angela Crawford about her team’s hot start the season. “We have an interesting mix of girls on the team this season.” The Lady Bears will field five seniors this season along with three freshmen. A major offensive force thus far this season has been a junior, however.
Houston County got two home runs from junior left fielder/catcher Grace Hardee and another from senior IF/OF Autumn Ring during the victory over Monticello. Against Jones County Hardee hit her third home run of the season and finished the game 3-5 with four RBI. “Our offense and defense did well but Houston County just out hit us,” says Lady Greyhounds head coach Blake Lyons.
The recent win streak and offensive outburst hasn’t surprised Hardee, “I’m just proud of my teammates and that our hard work is paying off.” She continued, “However we have a lot more work to do and we’re only getting better.” With the game tied at two after the first inning, the Lady Bears took a 4-2 lead during the second inning and never looked back.
Houston County is off for a few days before hosting Veterans High School on Tues., Aug. 16. There is a lot of softball lef this season and the Lady Bears are keeping close tabs on who might be surprised by or not believe in their recent success. “A lot of people have doubted our season,” says Hardee, “and I can’t wait to prove them wrong and get some rings this year.”
