History now brewing at The Coffee Cup

The Coffee Cup on Carroll and the Perry Area Historical Society have teamed up to serve Perry a “Cup of History.”

Recently, the restaurant gained two new owners, Gary and Charlene Moulliet.

“When we were getting to know about the business,” Charlene said, “our friend – now partner – Marty (Myers) told us about the history of the place.

“My husband Gary and I are from New Orleans and we both love and appreciate history. So we thought, what better way to learn the history of the building than from the town’s own historical society.”

That, in turn, led to the idea of having a history lesson each month at the establishment. Thursday’s opener – the kickoff – was the Coffee Cup itself. Residents learned about it from a presentation by Ellie Loudermilk, president of the Perry Area Historical Society.

“This building was first built in 1833 and of course remodeled over the years,” she said. “It started off being a drugstore, then over the years it has been a grocery store, doctors office, tax office, library and café. Back in 1950, it was originally the Coffee Cup.”

Loudermilk then opened the floor for anyone to share if they knew anything about the building. Most seemed to remember coming to the Coffee Cup when they were little to eat a good hamburger with their families. Myers shared that the tile was the original tile from the last time it was a drugstore.

“It was covered by carpet when we bought it in 2011,” said Myers.

Charlene announced the next Cup of History will focus on the veterans of the town. A Cup of History will be every second Thursday of the month from 3-4 p.m.
