Hibernation ends, the spring begins: Edwards prepares Houston County to “Bear Down” in 2022

HOUSTON COUNTY, Ga. — Coach Jeremy Edwards and the Houston County Bears began spring football practice May 4 on the countryside. The Houston Bears will have their spring practices for nine days before completing their “Black and Silver” inter-squad spring game, which will take place the evening of May 19.

Coach Jeremy Edwards and the Houston County Bears football organization are also hosting a few community events.

On May 7, there will be a Moms Clinic hosted by the Houston Bears at 10 a.m. at Houston County High School. On May 14, the Houston Bears will host their Reverse Raffle event at Rigby’s at 6 p.m. On May 23-25, the Houston Bears are hosting their Youth Camp at Freedom Field.

At the youth camp, players and coaches will teach the fundamentals of football, consisting of: Agility drills, receiving, passing, speed training, competitions, punting and kicking, tackling techniques, offensive line and defensive line drills. Children ages six to 12 are allowed to attend the youth football camp. The cost for the camp is $75. Please contact (229) 224-9227 for more information.

The Houston County Football Golf Tournament will be held on Friday, July 22, at 1:30 p.m. at the Southern Landings Golf Club. There is a $100 hole sponsorship and a $100 single player fee. There will also be an option to create a team for $400.

Coach Jeremy Edwards has come into the countryside, beginning the reconstruction of a winning culture. Edwards has the Bears focused on family and academics — and the newly implemented core values for the Houston County Football Team are: Energy, Toughness, Discipline, Family and Competition.

“I am excited to get started here at HOCO,” Edwards said. “I am also excited to bring in a new coaching staff, as we began work earlier this year.”The HOCO Bears finished 4-7 last season under Ryan “Big Call” Crawford and lost to Evans in the first round of the GHSA State Playoffs. NIck Jordan and Antwaan Hill are some key returners.

Tickets for the annual Black and Silver game are on sale. Admission price is $5. The intersquad scrimmage will kickoff at 7 p.m. on Thursday, May 19, at Freedom Field. Coach Jordan Singltary is the defensive coordinator for “Bear-Down” country. Coach Singletary has his Bear defense excited to make plays this fall. Houston County competes in a very competitive GHSA region 1-6A. The fall 2022 schedule consists of Thomas County Central, Tift County, Warner Robins, Veterans, Locust Grove, Perry, West Laurens, Lee County, Northside and Sumter County.
