Harry Belafonte: A difference maker

Getting your Trinity Audio player ready...

Each and every one of you has the power, the will and the capacity to make a difference in the world in which you live in.” ~ Harry Belafonte

Charismatic, intelligent, talented and concerned. These are just a few of the words that try to describe the gifted Harry Belafonte. Born in March 1927, the same as my own father, his contributions to society and the impact that he has had on our lives are too numerous to list. A great American and a great man who will be remembered for more than just his prodigious talent but also for his tremendous heart.

There will be many who will write about Mr. Belafonte and have so much more to say than this space allows but it is important to know that someone who has never lived in our community can still have an impact on it. As an artist, his work has influenced generations of actors, singers and others. As an activist, he lived on the front lines of historic change when it was neither safe nor convenient. Whether he was the first African American to win an Emmy Award or raising money by doing free concerts for the Civil Rights Movement, Harry Belafonte represented and showed up.

In a day and age when the cries of people were met with promises and pledges that one day something will be done, Mr. Belafonte stood up to champion those who had no voice. He was once asked about if his artistry impacted his activism, his response to that inquiry was that he was an activist before he was an artist. A veteran who served his country and a man who served the people.

History has documented how he not only supported the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr in life, he purchased the life insurance policy that supported his family after his death. The impact of one life can be felt far after that life has concluded. Harry Belafonte may have lived for 96 years physically, but his life will be felt for many more because he took the time to be. To be concerned about others. To be engaged in the struggle of others. To be involved rather than just an observer. What a great way to live your life, making a difference in the world we live in.

Try it.
