Harris County wins big
HARRIS COUNTY, Ga. — The boys from Harris County showed up and showed out in their first game of the Little League Southeast Regional Tournament, easily cruising to a shutout win over West Virginia, 12-0.
J. Pirkle, Harris County’s starting pitcher, was in the zone, striking out six hitters and only allowing one hit before he left the game in the top of the fourth inning.
In the top of the first inning, Pirkle got things going on offense as well, driving in the second baseman, W. Dimitri, who reached on a walk, with a double to left field. The spark from Pirkle must have ignited a blaze because Harris County exploded, tacking on eight more runs in the first inning.
E. Woosley, got in on the action as well with single to right, driving in Pirkle. Then T. Sharpe smashed a long double to center field, putting the team from Georgia up 4-0. In an attempt to stop the bleeding, West Virginia put in a new pitcher, but Harris County just would not let up.
W. Dimitri, in his second appearance at the plate this inning, doubled on a worm burner to center, knocking in R. Harper. Keeping the inning alive, B. Johnson and J. Pirkle hit pair of singles to put Harris County up 9-0.
After a huge first inning, the Harris County team relied on Pirkle’s arm and their defense to take control of the game, setting up a showdown with Virginia, who beat North Carolina in their first game.
Down 12-0, West Virginia started showing signs of life, putting together a string a base hits. However, Harris County Head Coach Wade Pirkle brought W. Dimitri on in relief from second, and he closed the show, striking out the final batter.
Riding the momentum from the big win, Harris County looks to go deep into the tournament and punch their ticket to the Little League World Series in Williamsport.
