Hardy’s Home: ‘This is home to me’
The last name Hardy rings bells in the Houston County area. Legendary face of Perry basketball, Brett Hardy, spent 16 seasons at the helm of Perry High School. After leaving Perry, Coach Brett Hardy led the boy’s basketball team at Veterans High School for four seasons.
Coach Hardy and the Veteran Warhawks had a most recent record of 18-11, before he retired from coaching. Hardy coached the Veteran Warhawks since 2018, and the Warhawks competed in the GHSA state tournament for several years. Coach Hardy also led the Veteran Warhawks to the Region 1-5A title game and an appearance in the 5A State tournament last season.
Now, the legendary coach is the new leader of the boy’s basketball team at The Westfield School in Perry.
“I am very excited to be at Westfield,” Hardy said. “I had retired from coaching at Veterans before receiving an offer from The Westfield School to coach.”
Coach Hardy has taken a job where the Hornets went 3-19 in 2021. “I felt like it was the best decision for my family and a great opportunity,” Hardy added. “I am a graduate of The Westfield School. My father coached here in the 1970s, so this is home to me.”
The Perry native has begun his coaching duties at The Westfield School and will put the hornets to the test on June 13.
This summer, the Westfield Hornets boy’s basketball team will travel to Columbus State University as well as Georgia Southwestern State University to compete in scrimmages.
On Monday, the junior varsity and varsity teams will compete against other schools in summer league scrimmages in Columbus, Georgia. The junior varsity will play Brookstone, and the Varsity will play the Tigers from Bradwell Institute (Hinesville).
