HALO Group breaks ground for renovations at New Perry Hotel

Officials with the HALO Group of Middle Georgia, a non-profit dedicated to helping achieve life outcomes for adults with special needs, held a groundbreaking ceremony Wednesday honoring Phase 1 renovations to come at the motor court behind the New Perry Hotel and Restaurant property on Main Street in downtown Perry.

Angela Cuti, executive director and CEO with the HALO Group, said she was appreciative of all those that attended the groundbreaking ceremony to celebrate the milestone. She also thanked two local businesses in their support of the project: JWS Construction and Morris Bank.

JWS has been contracted to complete the Phase 1 renovations, and Morris Bank served as the project’s financial partner.

Cuti added that the project would cost under $400,000 to complete.

“That [project] is going to consist of converting 18 motel rooms into 11 apartments,” Cuti said. “I believe six will be efficiency apartments, and there will be five one-bedroom apartments available.

“And nine of those will be available to rent for anyone in the community who meets the qualifications to rent the apartments or wants to live in downtown Perry. The other two will be reserved; we’re going to try an Airbnb format to offer a downtown environment for all of the great things and developments that are happening in downtown Perry.”

The self-contained efficiency apartments will feature a kitchenette with a refrigerator, stovetop range, cabinetry area, a living space and more within the approximately 400 square feet of space in each unit. The one-bedroom apartments will offer a more spacious option.

“The one-bedrooms are efficient for people who want more space, a private bedroom, an office area and then a separate space for the kitchenette-living area,” Cuti said.

She added that following renovations to the motor court area behind it, the main building on the property will also see renovations through an outsourced contractor who is experienced with historic buildings like the New Perry Hotel.

At some point, the HALO Group hopes to fundraise and make a community space out of the area where the groundbreaking ceremony was held, she said.
