Ground broken for new football stadium
A groundbreaking ceremony was held for Houston County’s new football stadium on Tuesday. The project will be funded by the 2012-2017 Education Special Purpose Local Option Sales Tax.
The stadium was designed by Southern A&E Architects and Engineers. The construction manager is Parrish Construction Group. Based on Georgia High School Association standards, the stadium will seat 6,102 fans.
“We have needed this athletic facility for several years to support our schools, as evidenced by the sharing of McConnell-Talbert and Perry High stadiums by our five high schools,” said Board of Education chairman Fred Wilson. “We want to express our appreciation to the citizens of Houston County for approving the 2012-2017 E-SPLOST to build this stadium.
“Our community has experienced tremendous growth since we built McConnell-Talbert Stadium in 1971. We are pleased to have the support needed to build this new facility to help accommodate the growth.”
The address for the facility is 111 Bear Country Blvd. across from Houston County High. The stadium is projected to be finished the end of August 2016 in time for the football season. The facility will primarily serve Houston County and Veterans High Schools.
“I want to thank our Board for having the vision to prepare for the growth in our community and for working to provide adequate facilities for our students,” said school superintendent Mark Scott. “I join Mr. Wilson in expressing appreciation to the voters for approving the E-SPLOST to build this new stadium.
“Many thanks to Scott Hill and the facilities department for the time and effort already devoted to getting this site ready. As facilities director, Scott will serve as the project supervisor. Thanks, too, to Dave Cyr and other members of Parrish Construction, our construction manager.
“We have many elected officials with us. Your participation and support are appreciated. Using regular venue standards, we could seat 8,250 visitors.”
The overall project budget is $12.5 million.
