Go Vintage for Mother’s Day

Getting your Trinity Audio player ready...

Of course I think my mother is one of the most wonderful mothers that has ever walked the face of the earth and I wish I didn’t live so far away.  I try to always send her flowers so she can see them and enjoy them.  I don’t know why there is always a huge display of flowers at funerals where the deceased does not know who sent a beautiful floral display.

There are so many wonderful vintage things that you can purchase inexpensively at your favorite antique shop that will make a unique gift for mom that cannot be found at the local drugstore, big box store or Amazon.

For instance, a lovely vintage teacup and saucer would make a nice gift for mom if she likes to drink tea or coffee.  There are so many nice china patterns and styles available.   Vintage porcelain or crystal dresser boxes are a great idea as well.  If you are going to give mom some flowers, how about purchasing an antique cut, pressed or blown glass vase and filling it with a fragrant bouquet from the nearest grocery or even flowers from your very own garden. Vintage costume or estate jewelry make a great gift also.

You know that your beloved mama still has those handmade creations you brought her as a child from grade school or Sunday school, perhaps your footprints or hand prints on a card or clay pot made to look like a butterfly?  I am guilty of saving those little childhood mementos myself.  I have a little pinecone turkey made by each of my children from various school days or Boy Scout crafts that I bring out every Thanksgiving.  I am nearly 60 years old and my mother still has things that I gave her in kindergarten!

You may want to consider some vintage embroidered tea towels or hankies for your mother or even an antique postcard bearing Mother’s Day greetings.  There are so many beautiful things that you can also find at flea markets or estate sales that can be repurposed into new and useful items.  You could take broken pieces of vintage china or costume jewelry and make a mosaic picture frame or any other number of things.

Wherever you are, please call or tell your mother and grandmother how very much you love and appreciate them because you never know how many years you have together and that is the best gift ever.  If your mother is no longer living you could pay homage to your mother by stopping by an elderly neighbor’s home or nursing home and taking a flower to someone that may not have anyone or children that live far away.

It is also fun if you have a friend who is a “fur” baby mother and send them a card or note from the “fur” baby with a faux or real paw print signature! I am so thankful for a loving mother, Happy Mother’s Day friends!
