GHPA hosts State Singles in Cordele
CORDELE, Ga. — The Georgia Horseshoe Pitchers Association State Singles Tournament was held in Turner Park in Cordele on September 29 and 30.
Pitchers and spectators enjoyed two days of beautiful weather, pitching and fellowship.
Friday at noon the Elders pitched and had some exciting games.
Championship Elders was won by Dale Marteney who had a perfect 6-0 record with a 71.75% ringer percentage. Larry Davis won second place with a 4-2 record and 63.14 % average. Jerry Wingfield took home third place.
Class A Elders was won by Larry Myers with a 6-0 record and 52.5% average. Marshall Little got second with a 4-2 record and a 48.75% average. Frank Harris, another Brunswick player, took home 3rd place with a ringer percentage of 43.75% and 3-3 record.
Class B Elders came down to a playoff between Rob Poole and Gary Riebesehl. Riebesehl won and had a final record of 6-1 and a ringer percentage of 35.71%. Poole pitched over his average at 35.36% and a 5-2 record. Willie T Hunter pulled out a 3-3 record and 26.67% for 3rd place.
After a break on Friday night for an awards banquet, the pitchers got a fresh start at 9 a.m. on Saturday for the Women, Men and Cadet classes.
Championship Men had eight 40-foot pitchers competing for state bragging rights.
Matthew Braswell was undefeated with a 7-0 record and pitched 50.99% for 1st place. 2nd place went to Robbie Bloodworth with a 6-1 record and ringer percentage of 48.65%. Scotty Harris got third place with a 4-3 record and 35.53% average.
In Class A Men Ronnie Miller beat Jack Lester in the playoff for 1st place with a 6-1 record and 32.50% ringer percentage. Jack Lester then was awarded 2nd place with a 5-3 record and had a 34.38 % ringer percentage. Marcus Waters took third place with a 4-3 record and 32.14% average.
Class B Men was also settled by a playoff between Steven Tigges and Larry Munn. Munn won the playoff game so his record of 7-1 and ringer percentage of 25.36% took 1st place! Tigges won 2nd place with a 6-2 record and 23.93%. Donald Echols took 3rd with a 5-2 record and ringer percentage of 22.92%.
Championship Women was an elite group of four women who pitched each other twice. Coni Hix pitched 60% and a perfect 6-0 record for first place. Vicki Marteney had a 3-3 record and pitched 49.62% for 2nd place. Sue Mayberry had a 2-4 record and pitched 49.64% for 3rd.
Class A Women was won by Kayla McDonald with a 5-0 record, and Maria McIntyre pitched 26% and ended with a 4-1 record that gave her 2nd place. Elaine Holland took 3rd with a 3-2 record and pitched 24%.
