Get your antiques ready for the Georgia National Fair

Cooler weather and the Georgia National Fair will be here soon! Did you know you could show off your antique collection and perhaps earn a little money for Christmas? First place award is $10 and you are allowed to enter up to 50 items, 2 per category. When I was the supervisor out there I started the tradition of inviting a museum from the state each year to join us in the antiques department. I can’t wait to see what they have lined up for this year!

Exhibits will be received on the Friday and Saturday before the fair from 10-4. If you are entering more than 10 items you need to preregister. Everything is online now and very easy to enter. Sometimes you may not be sure which category your items need to be in but you can verify that at check in time.

It is always fun to me to stand back and watch the fair goers ooh and aah over the collections and try to guess what some of the vintage farm implements were used for. Also you see that there may be a lot of the same winner’s names on the entries but that is only because there is not enough competition so we need lots and lots of folks to enter the competition! Get all your family members involved, young folks need to learn about history and you can do this with hands on antique collecting and exhibition.

Go to www.georgianationalfair.com and go to the fine arts tab and click on antiques to read the rules for entering the fair. There are all kinds of fun competitions besides antiques as well. If you have a collection of a particular antique item, you will need to enter it in the collections section and not antiques.

It is always amazing to me to see what folks bring in and how it is all tied together in a fun and interesting display. Be sure to look up and notice all the beautiful quilts in the Miller Murphy Howard building as well.

Typically an antique is considered to be an item that is at least 100 years old but for competition sake, the item has to be at least 50 years old. In this case your item must be before 1966. Wow! I am feeling like an antique! Happy Collecting!
