Gators stun Demons in Waycross
The Warner Robins Demons and the Ware County Gators both went into Friday night’s contest with winning records. For the Gators, it was 5-1, and the Demons were undefeated with a 6-0 record. The Demons were also coming into the game with Georgia’s longest winning streak.
The Gators were consistent on this past Friday night, as they scored early into the game and never looked back. The Ware County Gators scored on their first three drives and missed a 49-yard field goal going into the half. The halftime score was 22-7, but the third quarter was left scoreless. With the Demons down by double digits early on, Daveon Walker gave life to the Demons sidelines as he scored on a 59-yard reception, which was the longest play of the night for Warner Robins.
The Ware County Gators would go on to win the game by a score of 29-21. The win for the Gators ended the Demons’ 15-game winning streak. This was Ware County’s first victory over a Top 5 ranked team from the same classification since beating Northside Warner Robins in the 2012 state semifinals. The win improves Ware County’s record to 6-1, (2-0) in Region 1. The loss adds a one to Warner Robins losses column and they fall to 6-1, (3-1) in the region.
Senior Wide-Out Daveon Walker also finished the game with eight receptions for 104 yards and one touchdown. Walker is currently among the leaders in receiving in Class 5A, with 41 receptions for 785 yards in seven games played. Warner Robins tailback Malcom Brown is racking up the yards on the ground this season, as he had 25 carries for 112 yards against Ware County. This season, Brown leads the Demons rushing attack and is among the best in Georgia. The junior scat-back has carried the ball 158 times for 1,004 yards and 13 touchdowns this season.
The Warner Robins Demons will likely need to win out in order to avoid playing on the road in the GHSA state playoffs. The Demons’ toughest upcoming game will come on Halloween weekend against the Trojans from Coffee County. Next on the schedule for the Demons is Wayne County, as the Yellow Jackets will travel from Jesup on Friday night for a 7:30 kick-off in Warner Robins.
