WARNER ROBINS — A Fulton County man was arrested in Houston County after shooting and killing a woman outside an elementary school in Palmetto on Tuesday.
According to Sheriff Matt Moulton, 39-year-old Christopher Ates had family ties in the Warner Robins area.
Fulton County investigators entered Ates’ vehicle information into the FLOCK system, and officers from the Warner Robins Police Department and the Houston County Sheriff’s Office tracked the vehicle in the Russell Parkway and Corder Road area, Moulton said.
He said officers attempted to pull the vehicle over, which led to a high-speed chase. The chase went from Russell Parkway to south of Highway 247. Then they went east on Old Highway 96 towards the Twiggs County line, where Ates was arrested.
Moulton said he struck a semi truck, but since it did not disable his vehicle, the offender continued to flee. He eventually struck a bridge, which disabled the vehicle.
Ates then abandoned his vehicle and fled on foot. Deputies from HCSO pursued him and took him into custody without further incident.
In Houston County, Ates has been charged with felony fleeing and attempting to elude a Police Officer. Moulton said there are also a number of other traffic charges as a result of the pursuit.
He was also charged with Cruelty to Children because there was a toddler in the vehicle that officers were not aware of. In Fulton County, he is being held on murder charges.
Moulton praised deputies from the Sheriff’s Office, Warner Robins Police Department and the Georgia State Patrol for their assistance in the investigation.
“We took a violent offender off the roads at the end of that chase. I just appreciate their dedication,” he said.
