The ribbon cutting ceremony for Freedom Field (111 Bear Country Blvd., Warner Robins, Ga. 31088) took place this afternoon and was attended by a number of local politicians, law enforcement, county school board members, teachers, business owners and the media. The 6,100-seat facility will be the new home of both the Houston County Bears and Veterans Warhawks and by the sound of it, couldn’t have come any sooner. “We never felt at home at The Mac,” said Warhawks football coach David Bruce. “It was like we played 10 road games a year, now we have a place of our own.” Von Lassiter, head coach and Athletic Director at Houston County High School says about the new field, “It’s going to be top of the line, state of the art and a great place for our kids to showcase their talents.”

The field officially opens on Friday night when the Bears host the Eagle’s Landing High School (McDonough, Ga.) Eagles. The 5A-Region 4 Eagles are currently 0-1 following a 39-13 loss to rival Eagles Landing Christian Academy. HoCo comes into the matchup undefeated after two games against Mary Persons (at Mercer University’s Five Star Stadium on Aug. 26, 26-14) and at Peach County on Friday (49-31 after being behind by a touchdown after the first quarter and tied at halftime).

The official start to the Freedom Field rivalry between cohabiting programs will be on Friday, Sep. 9. On playing the Bears next week Bruce said, “They have an outstanding team and are a first-class program. We plan on coming out here and giving our best effort.” The Warhawks are currently winless after close losses at Northgate High School (Newnan, Ga.) and at Dublin High School, respectively. The Warhawks travel to Sylvester, Ga. to play the Worth County High School Rams on Friday.
