For the love of cars and fellowship
For car and truck lovers alike, Oak Grove CME Church’s third annual car, truck and motorcycle show held Saturday in Elko was all about traveling down memory lane for many, while also bringing the community together for some good fellowship.
Older and newer vehicles were on full display that morning and afternoon. Pastor Patricia Jefferson and Steward James Ford Jr., coordinator of the car show, said they usually have a turnout of about 100 people and the event is getting better every year. Ford’s hope for next year is to have more participation from motorcyclists.
“Our theme is to bring the community together,” he said. “You’ll be surprised by the amount of people who haven’t seen an old car in a long time.”
Ford, who enjoys older model cars, which he says brings back old memories, owns a 1966 Chevelle El Camino and a 1966 Chevelle Super Sport. He said for those interested in participating in next year’s event can visit the church at 2495 Elko Road or call the office at (478) 988-2572 on Sunday mornings. He said the registration fee to enter is $20, but the event is free for onlookers.
There were two judges Saturday and Jefferson also had an opportunity to pick her top vehicle. The following award categories were: Honorable Mention – James Gilmore, David Lanier, Robert Lumpkin, Jimmy and Irene Golden and Robert Smith; Best Truck – Charlie Wilson; Best in Show – Darrell Anderson; and Best Car and Pastor’s Choice – Segunda Wilson.
Wilson, who’s from Fort Valley and owns a silver 2014 Mustang V6 base model, said cars have always been a love of his since he was a young boy. He said his father was the one who first sparked his interest.
Wilson purchased his Mustang in 2015 and has since then gutted it, adding new features, which he plans to add other upgrades such as a different grille and suicide hinges.
This was his first time participating in Oak Grove CME Church’s car show, which he was ecstatic about winning two awards. Chuckling, Wilson said to celebrate his two wins, he was going home to have a big glass of orange juice. He noted he also won Best in Show in a car show in Byron.
Wilson said it was great being a part of Saturday’s event and meeting other car lovers. For those who may have the zest for cars and other automobile interests, he says, “Find something you like and the love will be there.”
