Just outside of the Houston County line, the Peach County 911 Emergency Communication Center sent units from the Fort Valley Department of Public Safety for immediate assistance at approximately 9:08 a.m. on Thursday morning in response to a pickup truck in full blaze on Highway 96 eastbound, between Sod Farm Road and Macon Road. The truck appeared to be hauling a trailer full of produce and was pulled over in the median.

The truck had been fully engulfed in the flames and suffered significant damage. According to a media release by Public Safety Director Lawrence Spurgeon, “the fire was under control within 30 minutes but the truck was a total [loss].” The release also noted that the Fort Valley Fire Marshal on the scene was unable to determine what had initially caused the fire.

Fortunately, neither the driver of the vehicle nor any others involved was harmed in the incident.

Both eastbound lanes had been blocked off and drivers were forced to pass the first responders outside of road lines. In the media release, Capt. A. Woodard is reported declaring, “We were assisted by units from the Peach County Sheriffs Dept. at the onset of this incident. We are thankful no one was hurt.”
