Fire on Story Road leaves mobile home a total loss, fire chief says
A fire on Story Road left a mobile home a total loss according to Houston County Fire Chief Chris Stoner.
HOUSTON COUNTY — On the morning of Tuesday, Sept. 30, firefighters of the Houston County Fire Department received a call at around 6:30 a.m. from neighbors on Story Road regarding a fire in a mobile home.
“[Neighbors] said the home was over half involved when the initial call came in, and that the occupant was already outside,” Houston County Fire Chief Chris Stoner said. “It was an older single-wide [mobile home] and it was pretty much a total loss when the initial call came in.”
Crews were on scene within five minutes and spent almost three hours fighting the blaze. Stoner said the occupant was able to get out of the home safely, and no injuries were sustained.
The fire was ruled accidental after an investigation.
Due to fires of this nature, any sort of relief for the occupants is handled through their insurance.
“If you’ve got insurance on your property, then they will put you in temporary housing, typically a hotel, until they can get you a more permanent temporary solution, whether that be an apartment or a rental home until your property is either replaced or repaired,” he said.
Regardless of whether they have insurance or not, Stoner said they contact the American Red Cross, which can provide the occupant with a hotel room for a night or two as a stopgap option.
“We’re praying for the occupant who lost his property,” he said.
