Excitement levels sky-high at Family Aviation Day

WARNER ROBINS, Ga. — The atmosphere was buzzing at the Museum of Aviation Foundation’s Family Aviation Day on Saturday morning. The free event located at the Museum of Aviation spanned from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. and provided a fun filled morning that the museum hoped would create memories for aviation fans and families.

The museum wanted the event to be interactive, according to the museum’s marketing and public relations specialist, Lacey Meador.

“We just wanted to offer a really fun hands on experience for children and adults alike,” Meador said.

The event featured many interactive exhibits for the public to enjoy. Visitors got the chance to learn about the aircraft on display at the museum, and even had the chance to climb into some of the cockpits.

At the theatre, The Emmy-award winning movie “Papa Said, We Should Never Forget” played. The gift shop and virtual reality ride were discounted for attendees, and there were food trucks by the playground, so visitors could grab a bite to eat during the event.

One of the main attractions, and the noisiest, was a helicopter landing. At around 11:30 a.m., A Bell 206L LongRanger helicopter piloted by Air Evac Lifeteam 154 circled around the museum and landed on site.

An ambulance in the sky, the helicopter provides medical transport and transfers to area hospitals. The chopper landed next to a US Air Force helicopter already on scene. Families had a chance to climb into both aircrafts and meet the crews piloting them.

For younger aviation lovers, the event featured entertaining STEM based activities like stomp rockets and paper airplanes. Meador explained the importance of providing these kinds of activities.

“That’s such an important thing to focus on, especially as these young minds are growing,” Meador said. “The impact of these kinds of activities that are being offered at the museum really opens up their minds to a whole new world of innovative creative exploration.”

If you missed the event, you still have a chance to see some aircraft on display. The museum at Robins Air Force Base is open Monday-Saturday from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., and admission is free.
