Enter your antiques in the Fair!
It’s that time of year again—the Georgia National Fair is just around the corner! Could you use a little extra spending money? Not only do you get a ribbon, but there are cash awards from $5-$10 depending on place, a $50 prize for Reserve Champion, and a $100 prize for Grand Champion! Take a look around the house and see what you have.
True Antiques are 100 years old, but items produced before 1974 will be considered for competition. 1974 sure doesn’t seem like 50 years ago to me; I was already 10 years old! You can include a 3×5 index card explaining the provenance or history of the item. Please make sure not to enter any reproductions; they will be disqualified. You are allowed to enter up to fifty items, two per category. Just make sure to pre-register on the GNFA website if you have more than 10 items.
The Perry Area Historical Society Museum will present a City of Perry Bicentennial Exhibit for the 2024 Georgia National Fair. The exhibit will include 200 years of history featuring local travel, fashion, education, agriculture, and tourism. Exhibits will include iconic photography, memorabilia, antiquity, and signage that showcases the past and present culture of a city incorporated in 1824.
Great effort is made to protect your items in locked cases at the discretion of the department. Sadly, entry numbers are dropping every year. I think part of that is due to the fact that old folks have lots of antiques, but they do not use computers! We need all of you collectors out there to show off your treasures!
All items must be clean and in good condition. Please don’t bring fragile items or items fresh from the barn covered in dirt and mud. There used to be professional and amateur categories, but we would like everyone to enter. Get the whole family involved! Kids can learn about history or family heirlooms and enter things. When my boys were little, I got them interested in an item they wanted to collect so when we went to antique shops or malls, they weren’t bored and were on the hunt for treasures.
Go to georgianationalfair.com and click on Home Arts and Fine Arts and then on the Antiques category for rules, categories and other pertinent information. See you at the fair!
