DUI accident leaves local motorcyclist dead
The life of a 31-year-old Warner Robins man was suddenly cut short in the early evening hours of Tuesday, November 2 as the result of a two-vehicle collision.
Officers of the Warner Robins Police Department (WRPD) responded to the call regarding the motorcycle versus SUV accident shortly before 6:30 p.m.
Silvestre Herrera, had been driving his 2003 Honda CBR 600, described as being either black or blue in color, northward in the outside lane of Moody Road at the time of the crash.
Emergency responders arrived to assist, only to find out that it was already too late for the motorcyclist. Herrera was less than a mile away from his home.
In the aftermath of the tragedy, WRPD Chief John Wagner reported that a second vehicle—a black 2001 Chevrolet Tahoe C1500—driven by a man identified as 67-year-old Edward Haslem of Piney Grove Road in Kathleen, tried to make a left turn onto Moody Road from Breckenridge Drive. It turned out to be a fatal attempt.
“The motorcycle struck the driver-side rear of the Tahoe and came to rest,” Wagner reported. He went on to reveal, “Mr. Herrera was deceased on scene.”
Both alcohol and speed were determined to be factors in the accident that ended with fatal results.
Haslem, the survivor of the impact, has been charged with driving under the influence of alcohol as well as driving while license is suspended. The extent of injuries received by Haslem, if any, was not shared. No information was provided as to whether or not he was taken to any of the area hospitals for medical attention before being taken to the police department for booking.
It is determined that up to ten officers came to assist at the scene of the accident
The examination into the accident is ongoing to including further investigation on speed, obtaining video and also interviews with those who were witnesses to the traffic incident. Other charges may be pending.
Anyone with information that may help in the investigation are encouraged to call Sgt. Tim Pippio, who is overseeing the accident investigation, at 478-293-1048 or Macon Regional Crimestoppers at 1-877-68CRIME.
