Dr. Andrew Wang – Perry Family Medicine Associates
Former Houston Healthcare Family Medicine Resident graduate, Dr. Andrew Wang, DO, has now opened his own practice in Perry. Wang officially opened in May through the Perry Family Medicine Associates.
Wang said he is looking forward to growing the practice and hopes that when patients come to see him that they feel like they are seeing an old friend.
“I hope that when a patient comes in with problems that I’m able to help and not just with medication,” Wang said. “It’s not always about giving someone medication, sometimes your anxiety and depression is understandable because of certain life circumstances, so that person may just need someone to talk to and listen. I think that’s something that is kind of lost in what we as doctors do.”
Wang was born in Peoria, Illinois. He graduated from the University
of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign with a Bachelor of Science degree in Psychology. Wang attended Medical School at the A.T. Still University School of Osteopathic Medicine in Kirksville, Missouri. He said his inspiration to become a doctor came about his second year of college.
“I originally wanted to be a computer engineer, but it was not for me,” Wang said. “It required a lot of high level math and meticulous coding. So then I took stock of what I was good at. I like to talk to people and I like investigative work. That’s what I love about Family Medicine. We have to know a little bit about a lot of things, so when our patients first come in, it’s up to us to figure out what’s going on.”
Wang said he loves the area and one of the many reasons why he decided to stay was because of the doctors he worked with during his time in the Houston Healthcare Family Medicine Residency program.
“During your residency you follow a large number of doctors one month at a time,” Wang said. “The doctors here are extremely professional and very helpful. You really get to know them by spending almost 10 hours a day with them for a month. So through that, I really enjoyed working with them and then I also enjoy the people of this community. Everyone is so welcoming and laid back. Not to mention, the weather is nice and I met my fiancé here, which she is from here, so I kind of had to stay” (he said laughing).
Wang is a doctor of osteopathic medicine. He said that means they focus more on the idea of body, mind, and spirit.
“So we focus more on the body’s ability to heal itself,” Wang said. “We prefer minor adjustments before just prescribing different medicines.”
Perry Family Medicine Associates is open Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Wang treats patients from childhood to senior with focuses on prevention, childhood growth and development, vaccinations, obesity, diabetes, and senior health. The practice is located at 1019 Keith Drive, Suite A, in Perry. For more information or to schedule an appointment call 478-218-1801.
