WARNER ROBINS — Warner Robins did not let Dutchtown (6-5) get in the way of their undefeated streak as they dispatched the Lady Bulldogs 68-34 on Day 2 of the Cliff Hutto Memorial Bear Brawl to move to 9-0.
The Demonettes have only lost two games dating back to Nov. 14, 2024 and those were both playoff games.
The Warner Robins girls have consistently been the most dominant program in the county and they routinely roll through opponents. Saturday was their fourth win this season by 30 or more and seventh by double digits.
One of the only issues with such a long streak of dominance is that it can create complacency. The Demonettes sleepwalked through some of the game against Dutchtown, and though they did lock back in for an 8-0 run to close the quarter, it’s something head coach Rebecca Ivory is actively fighting against.
“Doing different things at practice, changing up the way we practice, keeping them still having fun with it,” Ivory said on how she keeps the team engaged. “But we’re still not to the mentality that I want and that’s why we let up in the fourth quarter.”
Warner Robins lost the fourth quarter 11-9, which means that instead of winning by 40 the Demonettes won by 34. But that kind of mentality is what Ivory is combatting, and it’s a reason why she wasn’t particularly pleased with the win.
“That’s one of our goals is win every quarter, and we lost the fourth quarter,” Ivory said. “So as exciting as the win was I was disappointed in the fourth quarter. I always say we’re only as strong as our weakest link, and the fourth quarter was not good.”
One silver lining is that in the absence Trinitee Thomas, who’s still out with injury, the Demonettes are leaning on each other instead of letting it lessen their production.
“I feel like they’re relying on each other more. They’re picking up the slack,” Ivory said. “I told them we can go up or down, and I think they decided to go up and not down…But if we’re doing this now, look how great we can be when she comes back.”
One player in particular who has emerged in this time is senior guard Joselyn Casanova. She brings energy to the floor particularly on defense. Ivory utilizes her in the front of her full court pressure to hound ball handlers.
“JC is just an athlete. She’s gonna do the scrappy things…she’s doing the little things. She’s picking up the slack a little bit especially defensively,” Ivory said. “Her energy is great for us defensively…She had a great offensive night for her. She’s little but she’s finding a way to create her shots.”
