County scales back some on Perry Library project

It could mean the difference between a Dutch Woordenboek der Nederlandsche Taal or a Webster’s – Super Size Me.

That is: scheduled renovations to the Perry Public Library. According to reports, Houston County will scale back on the size of the project from a planned 6,000-square-foot addition down to 4,500 square feet. (Note: The Dutch dictionary by the way is reportedly the biggest in the world at 40 volumes! And a Webster’s is … well, a Webster’s.)

That is reportedly due to the price tag being approximately $400,000 more than the $1.8 million the county has set aside for the construction.

International City Builders is the management-at-risk contractor for the contractor while JMA Architecture is responsible for its design.

County officials have also reportedly pushed back the start date from this spring to the fall.

The Perry Library project is part of the county’s efforts to update its library system. It opened a new library in Centerville in 2011.

Nola Brantley Memorial Library in Warner Robins underwent an extensive remodel of $1,927,520.61 and reopened in November. The remodel included the expansion of approximately 5,000 square feet, complete renovation of the old building, 32 new public-access computers and all-new landscaping.

The Houston County Board of Commissioners have since added two change orders for the facility. One is for $4,100 and is for the installation of roof canopies over the two doors on the west side. The other is for $163,750 and is for the complete roof replacement of both the flat built-up roof section and of the barrel roof section.

That brought the total to $2,091,270.61. I also allowed for an increase in completion of 240 days – approximately May 31.
