On April 4, 36 horseshoe pitchers took part in the Cordele Blaster.

The 30-foot Championship Class was exciting (top three shown above left). Ron Cloutier handed Larry Myers of Perry an early defeat and looked to be headed to first place. Cloutier ran into Larry Munn, who gave him his only defeat of the regular round pitching 60 percent. After his loss, Myerse took off and pitched above average the rest of the initial round. Myers led by four points with four shoes to go against Munn, who then hit four ringers. Myers only went three for four in ringers, but held on for a one-point win. That set up a playoff with Cloutier, both at 4-1. Myers was too hot, taking the playoff and winning the class 5-1 (159 ringers in 240 shoes).

The 40-foot Championship Class proved to be just as exciting (top three shown above middle). It looked like Ronnie Miller, representing Cordele and Perry, had a shot to win but fell out of the playoff between Marcus Waters (also of Cordele and Perry) and Kevin Thomas. Thomas and Waters were tied 3-1 and took on each other in the final pairing. Waters saved his best for Thomas and was too good for Thomas to surpass. Waters had 69 ringers in 200 shoes to go with the 4-1 record.

John Rackley of Perry was in a Class A playoff with Andrea DeFoe. Rackley won their first head-to-head but lost to Perry’s Jim Henderson. Rackley wound up topping DeFoe for the Class Championship at 5-1 and 92 ringers in 240 shoes.

Jean Bullington of Cordele and Perry had a perfect day in Class B. In her five wins, she made 63 ringers in 200 shoes. Doug DeFoe was second and Warner Robins’ George Schmidt placed third.

Rookie Donald Cleaton Sr. of Perry made the most of his first tournament. He never lost a game in five matches to win Class D. Son Donald Cleaton Jr. was in this class and led his father head-to-head by one with two shoes to play. Dad got the ringer he needed to win by two.
